Physical Data Erasure

Physical Data Erasure

At BTR we offer two alternatives where physical data destruction is required; shredding and drilling to fragment or disable the hard disk itself.

Shredding

Data bearing items are placed in a shredder and reduced through two stages to granules of 20mm in size.

When this process is complete the shredded items are processed to separate ferrous and non ferrous metals and other component materials.

In line with BTR UK’s environmental commitments the different component parts are then made available for smelting down and reuse.

Through this process all data bearing items are completely fragmented and recycled and any data is irretrievably destroyed.

Drilling

Hard Disk Drives are removed from their host unit, PC Base Unit, Server or Laptop.

A drill is then forced through the platter disk and a hole is created in the central disk which holds the items memory and any data.

This process removes the Hard Disk Drive's ability to be read which ensures that the data on the disk can never be accessed again.

From here, in line with our Environmental Recycling Policy, the Hard Disk Drives are environmentally recycled so that component items such as copper and steel can be recovered.

In some instances Hard Disks will be drilled on site as an added security prior to moving them.

In both cases the process is witness tested by our own security cleared personnel and certified for secure data destruction. Certification of the destruction and recycling of equipment is then provided to our customers.
