The WEEE Directive

Adopted into UK law in early 2007, the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive is an EU wide directive designed to make manufacturers and importers (the ‘producer’) responsible for the cost of disposal of redundant equipment. The Directive sets targets for recovery and recycling across ten key categories of products (Category 3 is IT and Telecoms).

If you are a manufacturer, importer or brand owner selling into the Business to Business Market then you are likely to have obligations under the WEEE Directive. One of these obligations is the need to join one of a small number of “Producer Compliance Schemes” approved by the Environment Agency.

BTR runs a specialist Producer Compliance Scheme called WEEE Compliance UK and we may have the right compliance solution for you. We would be happy to discuss the impact that the WEEE Directive might have on your business and how we could help.

The WEEE Compliance UK Producer Compliance Scheme is designed with the Business to Business electronics, IT and communications industries firmly in mind and with a simple ethos:

Delivering the best possible value to the producer with the highest levels of Environmental Commitment.

Producer responsibility under the WEEE Directive is ONLY to finance the collection and disposal of equipment. This means that most other Producer Compliance schemes typically focus purely on the quick scrapping of equipment and make NO provision for : data removal, asset management services (such as asset level reporting) or any potential remarketing return.

WEEE Compliance UK provides producers of IT equipment with a number of unique benefits :

  • Add value to your customers
  • Generate additional revenues

The same specialist services that BTR offers to its corporate customers can be applied to work undertaken by WEEE Compliance UK.

WEEE Compliance UK

What differentiates the WEEE Compliance UK scheme from others is the approach and our mission to make compliance easier and more rewarding for our members

Financial Return

The WEEE Directive encourages but makes no direct provision for the re-use of old equipment. At WEEE Compliance UK we believe that the most environmentally friendly form of recycling is re-use. Wherever possible we will refurbish assets or recover components in order to re-sell and make a financial return to the producer.

Asset Level Reports

Rather than simply feeding everything into a shredding machine WEEE Compliance UK can provide reports detailing how each individual asset has been treated – providing the level of detail that your customers really would value.

Data Erasure

The WEEE Directive does not cover the handling of sensitive data, however at WEEE Compliance UK we recognise the importance of treating data bearing items in a secure way. WEEE Compliance UK processing facilities provide secure, irrevocable and indemnified erasure of clients data to UK Government approved levels.

Flexible

At WEEE Compliance UK we will not attempt to tie you to certain levels of processing – we will only charge you for the work that we do.
